I am a jewellery designer, maker and tutor at Silver and Stone Jewellery. After a career as a senior manager in the public sector, and a Business Development Manager in number of Business Links, I decided to begin my own business journey in 2013.
‘Initially I just wanted to create a business around my family’, however very quickly I realised that wasn’t all I wanted. I wanted to be a successful, profitable and independent business woman.
I don’t want a ‘hobby’ business, I want to be able to grow my business year on year. I want to seize the opportunities that are out there and avoid the bright shiny objects that are a distraction and are not going to bring me profit.
As an entrepreneur it can be a bit lonely and frankly very hard work! I don’t always want to dump on my family and friends. I want to leave my work at work! I love working with other people and have worked with Sharyn Coleman for some time. When I moved into my current studio, it was Sharyn I asked for advice. She asked those awkward questions that you want to hide from, but I’m still here in this studio 4 years on, so it was good advice!
I tend to ‘chunk’ my plans into 3 month projects, and coming up to September this year, I thought I’d do the same. Last year I planned my Pre-Christmas 3 months and it made a huge difference! So again, I got my diary, my planner, signed up to a Facebook group, and then … just nothing. Nothing came to my mind. I’ve lots of ideas, I’ve done this plenty of times before.
So what was missing?
I went to Sharyn for advice again and realised it was that sounding board I needed so that I didn’t try to do everything. Possibly a perspective from likeminded people, not just my own. When I set my mind to something I am very focused. Scarily so! Possibly too focused. I don’t always pause to reflect on how things are going, or seek feedback! On other occasions I see what seems like an amazing opportunity, and chase after it! Only to find that I’m chasing a bright shiny object that is pretty, but doesn’t suit my business. After chatting with Sharyn for a while she mentioned her ‘Your Life/Your Business Programme’. This sounded just what I needed.
A 3 month commitment, which won’t then drop off the edge of a cliff!
1 day every 7 weeks to really focus on one business challenge or opportunity IN PERSON! A real live meeting!! Not just a virtual one I ignore!
An opportunity to take a step back and work ON my business instead of IN my business.
To have peers to add another perspective
To use some of my previous experience as a business advisor and business strategist
To create plans that are achievable and I can commit to
To possibly collaborate with other businesses
And to have some accountability from my fellow group members!
Yes this sounded perfect for me, and after we started thinking about locations, expensive hotels, I thought –‘why not have this at my studio?’ I have a creative space, ideal for thinking outside the box, there’s lots of free parking, and it’s in a beautiful country setting!
