Looking back at 2016 with gratitude
I love January – it is a time of review, planning and thinking about life, universe and everything. This year I’m looking back at 2016 with gratitude.
It’s a great time to look back on how things have gone, what worked well, what didn’t and what I’d like to do better for the next year.
A year ago I set off 2016 with plans to celebrate a big birthday in style. If I was going to be 50, I wanted to have a wonderful and memorable year. During the year though, I recognised that I was really cherishing some of the smaller everyday things that I did, particularly those with family and friends.
Don’t get me wrong, I loved going to a Michelin restaurant for my birthday, I loved going to New York with the Girls, and my dream holiday to Venice was unsurpassable. However, it helped me to recognise lots of lovely things in my life; that I will always be grateful for and they aren’t just for special years. They are the things that make you feel loved and valued, as a friend, mum and wife.
After spending the week rushing around for work, I just out of time to meet my friends for a girls night in. I was gutted, then thought ‘why don’t I go to them in the morning and we can have a brunch out?’ So that’s what we did! We had a wonderful chat, laugh and brunch cooked for us, with no kids, just time for us. I was very grateful to spend this relaxing guilt free time with friends that I’ve known since we were at school together.
I’m usually working on Saturdays, teaching my jewellery making classes. When I get home I love chillaxing by sitting with my family squashed up on the sofa, nudging each other and enjoying watching Strictly Come Dancing. It’s one of the few times we are all together, doing something together and having a giggle. We’ll have to find something else to watch now, but it will be for us all. It might take two hours to agree what we do or watch, but that’s all part of the fun!
For my birthday I asked my sister in law if we could do something together for the day. It didn’t have to be expensive, but just spend some time together. We are normally with the whole family and this was an opportunity to do something different. We finally did it after 5 months! We went Christmas shopping together!! That may not sound that exciting to you, but Christmas shopping can be a drag on your own, and I generally want to get it over and done with as soon as possible. We had an amazing day! We got most of our shopping done, treated ourselves to lunch, prosecco, and then relaxed at home afterwards.
Throughout the year, I have loved the time I spent with my friends and family the most. That’s what matters. We are all rushing about trying to do ‘stuff’ that to spend some time with people just ‘being’ with them, is the most wonderful thing. I don’t think I’ve done that enough in 2016, and if I’ve got one resolution for 2017, it would be, to actually be with people when I’m with them. Not on my phone or Ipad, not thinking about work or what’s for tea, not thinking about the next thing on my never ending list of things to do. Just be with them.
Happy New Year folks !
